IxDA Limerick plans for 2015

After a very quiet period, IxDA Limerick is starting 2015 with plans for a much busier year!  The great news is that we applied for and were granted funding by the Year of Irish Design 2015 for organising a series of talks and workshops throughout this year!

The list of invited speakers will include interaction designers, product/service designers, graphic & sound designers, architects, urban planners, cultural heritage professionals, academics from Ireland and other European countries. The topics of the talks were selected to illustrate a wide range of design practices related to ongoing or past projects. We will work to bring over reputed speakers who are authorities in their practice or research area.

The series of talks will mark the revival of the Limerick branch of the IxDA, which had a sporadic activity in the previous year due to a lack of time and financial resources. In the past, we benefitted from financial support provided by the University of Limerick, and in 2011 we were the lucky recipients of a grant from the United Nations as part of The United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.

The series of talks will give the public a chance to learn more about interaction design and its role in today’s economy and increase the demand for Irish designers and design, as well as providing a forum for interaction design practitioners and academics to talk about their practices and achievements.

All the talks/events will take place in the Absolute Hotel in Limerick – traditionally the venue for IxDA Limerick meet-ups. We will aim for the second Monday of each month – but based on the speakers’ availability, there might be changes. Talks are at the moment scheduled for March, April, May and June. After the summer break, we will have another set of speakers in September, October and November.

A Pecha-Kucha event dedicated to Irish Design is planned for June, and in October, we will have an Edithaton to encourage Wikipedia contributions on the topic of Irish Design.

The old organising team (Dr. Gabriela Avram and Alan Ryan) is joined by brand new forces – Dr. Nora O’Murchu and Laura Maye. Together, we hope to create an outstanding program of events for IxDA Limerick this year!
